Social media has recently been sweeped with images that look like they belong to a Studio Ghibli animated movie. Selfies, family photos and even memes and movie scenes have been re-imagined with the soft pastel palette characteristic of the Japanese animation company founded by Hayao Miyazaki.
This followed OpenAI’s latest update to ChatGPT. This significantly improved ChatGPT’s image generation capabilities, so much that the users can easily create convincing ghibli art images in seconds. It has been so trending that the system literally crashed due to user demand a few days back.
But this is also raising new questions about copyright and creative ownership. Is the AI generated image safe? How does it ensure you of the privacy?

Ghibli – The questionable side
Many security experts have raised major concerns over data threats and privacy leak of the users. The users, hence users should be mindful of how their personal data could be used while using AI-image generation technology. As many AI models, particularly those used in the image generation, rely on large training datasets, In some cases, photos of you might be used without your consent.
Artist raised concerns too
Even the Japanese animator, Hayao Miyazaki has been critical of the AI generated images, called it a disrespect for an artist and his work. This came after the recent trend of people using ChatGPT to generate images in his world-famous animation style.
Despite of the roadblocks, Chat GPT and AI has been successful in getting all attention of the users by creating cute Studio-ghibli versions of them. And in the recent update, the feature has also become free of any cost for its users. Now the question here is – If you’re using it for free, are you the price?
