MSD Returns as CSK Skipper
MS Dhoni is back as the captain of Chennai Super Kings (CSK), as Ruturaj Gaikwad was excluded with a fragmented elbow from the IPL 2025 season. CSK head coach Stephen Fleming confirmed the news ahead of his match against Kolkata Knight Riders. It marks Dhoni's return for the first time as a skipper after CSK leads to the title in IPL 2023 as CSK captain
Gikwad injured during Rajasthan Royals match
Ruturaj Gaikwad was hurt on March 30 during a match against Rajasthan Royals in Guwahati. He was killed by a delivery from Tushar Deshpande, chasing a target of 183, on his unprotected left elbow. Despite this shock, he played the next two matches against Delhi Capital and Punjab Kings. Fans and experts were surprised as they did not show any indication of discomfort on the field or with the bat.
However, medical tests later revealed a hairline fracture. The team management decided that he decided not to risk further losses. Fleming said, "Ruturaj Gaikwad rejected the IPL due to fracture on his elbow." "We appreciate the efforts made to keep playing, but unfortunately, he will miss the rest of the season."

Along with Gaikwad, the responsibility of leadership has returned to MS Dhoni. Former India skipper will lead CSK in the remaining matches of IPL 2025. Fleming also joked, called Dhoni a "unaccounted player", who moved forward to lead again.
This step is not new. Back to IPL 2022, Dhoni captured the middle season after Ravindra Jadeja left the post after a poor team's performance. That year, CSK lost several matches just like this season.
CSK IPL is struggling in 2025
CSK has not started the best this year. He has lost four games in a row and currently ranks ninth on points table. The team is under pressure to move around fast.
Gaikwad was one of some bright places. He batted at number 3 and scored two fifties in five matches. His absence will give up a big difference in both leadership and batting.
Can Dhoni revive CSK again?
Under Dhoni returns captaincy, CSK has won five IPL titles in 2010, 2011, 2018, 2021 and 2023. He has also won two Champions League T20 Trophy. His cool leadership and fast cricket brain have helped CSK to bounce back several times before.
