China's Military Drills Near Taiwan: A Strategic Warning
China has launched large-scale military exercises around Taiwan, involving its army, navy, and rocket forces. These drills, described as a "stern warning" against separatism, highlight China's military strategy and its determination to bring Taiwan under its control. The exercises also reflect ongoing tensions in U.S.-China relations and their impact on Asia-Pacific geopolitics. In response, Taiwan dispatched its warships as Chinese military ships moved closer to its waters.

Rising Tensions Between China and Taiwan
Taiwan’s President Lai Ching-te recently called China a "foreign hostile force," provoking a strong reaction from Beijing. China has labeled Lai a "separatist" who threatens its sovereignty. In a propaganda campaign, China’s military released a video portraying Lai as a "parasite" destroying Taiwan. The video, widely shared in Chinese news, depicts him as a green cartoon bug held by chopsticks above a burning Taiwan, further intensifying the dispute.

China’s Military Strategy Behind the Drills
According to China's military, the drills focus on air and sea patrols, striking maritime and land targets, seizing control of key routes, and imposing blockades. These exercises showcase China’s ability to encircle Taiwan, a move that raises concerns about the future of cross-strait relations. Chinese state media reports that these drills are a direct message to Taiwan and its allies, warning against further moves toward independence.

Taiwan’s Defense Response to PLA Drills
Taiwan has condemned China’s actions, calling Beijing a "troublemaker." Taiwan’s government assured its people that the military is prepared to defend the island. Officials reported that over ten Chinese warships approached Taiwan’s 24-nautical-mile boundary, prompting Taiwan to deploy its own naval forces. Taiwan’s Defense Ministry confirmed that China’s Shandong aircraft carrier group had entered its defense zone, leading Taiwan to activate land-based missile systems.
China’s Psychological Warfare: Propaganda and Threats
China has intensified its propaganda efforts through a series of psychological warfare videos. One video, titled "Closing In," shows Taiwan being surrounded by Chinese military forces. Another mocks President Lai, portraying him as a parasite spreading across the island, with captions claiming he is poisoning Taiwan. The third video, "Subdue Demons and Vanquish Evils," features Sun Wukong, the legendary Monkey King, symbolizing China’s military dominance. The footage blends video game-style animations with real-life clips of Chinese fighter jets, reinforcing China’s aggressive stance.
U.S.-China Relations and Regional Impact
These drills occurred shortly after U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth left the region. During his visits to Japan and the Philippines, Hegseth criticized China’s actions, calling Japan "indispensable" in countering Chinese aggression. A U.S. spokesperson from the American Institute in Taiwan condemned China’s behavior, stating that Beijing is "not a responsible actor" and is willing to put regional security at risk.
A senior Taiwan security official suggested that China launched these drills as a message ahead of U.S.-China trade talks. The official believes China wants to avoid direct confrontation with Washington but is using Taiwan as a strategic pretext to showcase its military power. "Taiwan is their best excuse. That’s why they launched these drills as soon as the U.S. defense secretary left Asia," the official said.
China’s Internal Issues and Military Focus
Some analysts argue that China’s military drills also serve a domestic purpose. Taiwan’s security sources claim that Beijing is keeping its soldiers occupied with exercises to prevent them from discussing China’s ongoing anti-corruption crackdown. Over the past few years, China has dismissed several high-ranking officials, including former Defense Minister Li Shangfu in 2024, as part of its military reform efforts. Taiwan’s Defense Minister Wellington Koo responded, "They should focus on fixing corruption within their military instead of disrupting peace in the region."
China’s Coast Guard Joins Military Exercises
China’s coast guard has also been involved in the drills. Official reports state that they are practicing "inspection and capture operations," simulating detentions of "unwarranted vessels." China claims this demonstrates its "legitimate jurisdiction" over Taiwan. However, Taiwan and its allies view it as another form of military intimidation meant to destabilize the region.

China’s Growing Military Presence in the Asia-Pacific
Chinese state media reports that military drills around Taiwan have become "routine operations." Military experts believe these exercises are part of China’s long-term military strategy, strengthening the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) and preparing for potential conflict. According to Chinese military analysts, repeated drills enhance the PLA’s readiness for war and provide an opportunity to test new tactics.
China has conducted multiple military exercises around Taiwan in recent years. The largest occurred in 2022, following then-U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taipei. Each time tensions escalate between Taiwan and China, Beijing intensifies its military presence in the Taiwan Strait, signaling its unwillingness to back down.
What’s Next in the Taiwan-China Conflict?
As tensions rise, Taiwan remains on high alert. So far, Taiwan has not detected any live fire from Chinese forces, indicating that these drills are primarily a show of force rather than an immediate act of war. However, the situation remains fragile, and any miscalculation could lead to an unintended escalation.
Taiwan’s government has reaffirmed that only its people can decide the island’s future. Meanwhile, China insists that reunification is inevitable, whether through diplomacy or force. With increasing military activity in the region and growing involvement from the U.S., the Taiwan-China conflict continues to be a focal point in global security discussions.
Trending News: China, Taiwan, and Military Strategy
The latest developments in the China-Taiwan conflict continue to dominate global headlines. As China intensifies its military strategy and U.S.-China relations evolve, the situation remains fluid. With PLA drills near Taiwan becoming more frequent, Asia-Pacific geopolitics will remain a key area of focus in international affairs.
