Farooq Defends PM Modi, Slams Congress Over 'Gayab' Jibe

"Where’s He Missing?” Farooq Abdullah Backs PM Modi, Slams Congress Over ‘Gayab’ Jibe Amid Pahalgam Tensions

In a sharp rebuttal to the Congress party's 'Gayab' (missing) taunt aimed at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, National Conference (NC) president Farooq Abdullah came out in strong support of the Prime Minister, dismissing the criticism as baseless and politically motivated.

Speaking to the media in Jammu, the veteran leader responded firmly to Congress posters that implied PM Modi was "missing in action" following the deadly terror attack in Pahalgam on April 22, which claimed the lives of 28 people, mostly tourists.

“Where is he missing? I know he is in Delhi,” Abdullah quipped, brushing aside the Congress party’s attack. “We have given our full support to the Prime Minister. After that, we should not be questioned. The Prime Minister should do whatever work he needs to,” said the 87-year-old leader, who has served three terms as Jammu and Kashmir’s Chief Minister.

The Congress had triggered a political storm by sharing an image on X (formerly Twitter), depicting a silhouette of the Prime Minister's attire without his body, with the word ‘Gayab’ boldly written on top. The caption in Hindi read: “Zimmedari ke samay – Gayab” (Missing at the time of taking responsibility). Facing backlash, the party later deleted the post.

Abdullah’s comments come at a time when India-Pakistan tensions have reached a boiling point after the Pahalgam terror attack. While India has launched intensified counter-terror operations in Jammu and Kashmir and downgraded diplomatic ties with Pakistan, Islamabad has responded with warnings and a midnight press conference.

Farooq Abdullah also cautioned Pakistan against further provocations about nuclear warning,“We also have nuclear power, and we had it even before them,” he said, adding that India would never strike first but is fully capable of responding if provoked.

In a show of unity and resolve, Abdullah's remarks underscored the gravity of the situation while calling for responsible political discourse amid national crisis. As tensions escalate, his stance signals a rare moment of cross-party support for the government’s actions on national security.
