In a strong statement at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) via video link, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni criticized the left for branding right-wing leaders like herself, former U.S. President Donald Trump, and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi as threats to democracy. She pointed out the hypocrisy in how left-leaning figures such as Bill Clinton and Tony Blair are celebrated, whereas conservative leaders face relentless attacks.
Meloni Highlights Double Standards
Meloni emphasized that the left often uses democracy as a selective tool, supporting only those who align with their ideology. She argued that when leaders like Trump, Modi, or herself speak about national sovereignty, economic growth, or cultural preservation, they are immediately labeled as authoritarian or undemocratic. However, when leftist leaders implement policies restricting freedom of speech or suppressing political opposition, they are praised as defenders of democracy.

Public Response and Changing Perceptions
The Italian PM noted that citizens worldwide are increasingly rejecting these biased narratives. She stated that people can now see through the hysteria created by the left to discredit conservative leaders. According to Meloni, voters are making independent choices based on governance, economic policies, and national interests rather than media-driven fear campaigns.
A Call for Fair Political Discourse
Meloni urged for a more balanced and fair discourse in global politics. She stressed that democracy is about representing the people's will, not about favoring one ideology over another. By calling out the left's hypocrisy, she reinforced the need for respecting diverse political perspectives without unnecessary fear-mongering.
Her speech resonated with conservatives globally, as she joined other leaders in pushing back against the narrative that right-wing governance automatically threatens democratic values.
